Did you forget your password and can no longer log in? Or was your account hacked?

You are not alone! Hundreds of people turn to us with similar questions every day. Fortunately, Facebook offers several automated ways to reclaim your account. Whether you forgot your password or can no longer log in because a hacker changed it, you have several options. We’ll show you how to recover your Facebook account, step-by-step.

Note: This article covers everything I know about Facebook account recovery. Read this article, read the comments, and if you still have questions, leave your own comment and hope for the best. There’s nothing more I know or can do to help.

1. Are You Still Logged In Somewhere?

Before you try to recover your account, check whether you are still logged into Facebook on any of your devices. This could be another browser or browser profile on your computer, your Facebook Android or iOS app, or a mobile browser, for example on your tablet.

If you can access Facebook anywhere, proceed to step 1a of our article on what to do when your Facebook account got hacked.

2. Have You Tried the Default Account Recovery Options Yet?

OK, so you could not find a device where you were still logged into Facebook. Let’s proceed with the recovery then. If possible, use a network or computer from which you’ve logged into your Facebook account before.

First, you need to identify your account. Head to the Facebook recover page and use an email address or phone number you previously added to your Facebook account. Even if it doesn’t say so, you can also use your Facebook username.

Once you successfully managed to identify your account, you will see a summary of your profile. Before you proceed, carefully check whether this really is your account and whether you still have access to the email address(es) or mobile phone number(s) listed.

Should you No longer have access to these? proceed to point 3 of this article.

If all looks well with the contact details that Facebook has on file for you, however, click Continue. Facebook will send you a security code. Retrieve it, enter it, and rejoice in having recovered your account.

If the code never arrives, click Didn’t get a code?, which will take you back to the previous Reset Your Password screen. You can try again or maybe you’ll realize that you don’t have access to the account/s after all.

Back Into Your Account

If you managed to regain access to your account and if you suspect that your account was hacked, immediately change your password (use a strong password!) and update your contact information. These are key steps in securing your Facebook account. Be sure to remove any email addresses or phone numbers that are not your own or that you can no longer access.

We strongly recommend that you enable two-factor authentication, so this won’t happen again.

3. Did Your Contact Information Change?

Often, it’s not possible to recover an account using the options above. Maybe you no longer have access to the email address(es) and phone number(s) you once added to your profile. Or maybe a hacker changed this information. In that case, Facebook allows you to specify a new email address, which they will use to contact you about recovering your account.

To start this process, click the link No longer have access to these? in the bottom left on the reset password page to start the recovery process. Facebook will ask you for a new email address or phone number, so that they can reach out to you if needed. Click Continue to proceed.

If you have set up Trusted Contacts, you will have the chance to use these to recover your account in the next step.

You’ll need to remember at least one full name of your three to five Trusted Contacts to reveal all of them. Note that you only need three codes to recover your account.

If you didn’t set up Trusted Contacts, you might be given the option to answer one of your security questions and reset your password on the spot. As an additional precaution, this comes with a 24 hour waiting period before you can access your account.

Otherwise, you might have to wait until Facebook gets in touch to verify your identity. Be patient!

4. Was Your Account Hacked & Is Sending Out Spam?

In the event that your account was hacked and is posting spam to the walls of your friends while you can no longer access it, you should report your Facebook account as compromised.

This will actually start a similar yet different process as the one outlined above. While you will use the same information to identify your account, in the following step you will be able to use either a current or an old Facebook password to recover your account.

This is useful in case a hacker changed your password, but it may also come in handy in case you forgot your new password.

5. Still Locked Out of Facebook?

If all of the recovery methods above failed, your last hope is Facebook itself. You can try emailing security@facebookmail.com to explain your situation. They might give you a chance to prove your identity using your passport or driver’s license. This can take several weeks, so practice patience.

Note: If you didn’t use your real name on Facebook, your hopes for recovering your account this way are close to zero.

How to take 360 degree photo

Just as a little primer - I've decided to include both panoramas and 360 photos in this article. While a panorama is a long panoramic shot, a 360 photo is comprised of multiple photos that are stitched together to create the impression of a 360 degree photo. Facebook doesn't differentiate between the two, and they are often just treated as the same thing. I don't share this opinion as technically, they are two different photo modes and often they require two different apps to create them. 

How to take 360 photos with your Android smartphone

Taking 360 photos with your Android smartphone is actually super easy. If you own a Nexus or a Google Pixel, the stock Android camera already includes the features for panorama and photosphere/surround shot. Quite a few Samsung phones had a "photosphere" feature as well but for whatever reason, it was removed. You can easily get it back on newer Samsung devices by going into the Camera > Camera modes(swipe from left to right) > Download > and then you can download surround shot.

Most other Android smartphones will need a separate app to take a 360 photo. The Google Play Store offers a myriad of apps that all proclaim to take the best 360 photos - but in my opinion, the most practical, clean and spam/add free is Street View by Google (surprise). Ultimately, it's just a matter of preference as they all are work the same.

Google Street View 

Pick an interesting spot that you want to capture in a 360 photo and open the Street View app (or any other 360 photo app of your choice). Move your smartphone around and guide the circle over the orange dots until the image has been captured. Do this about 20 or so odd times until your entire surrounding has been photographed. In Street View, you'll need to confirm that you are done, whereas some other apps will automatically start stitching the image together. And that's all there is too it - now you know how to take a 360 photo with your smartphone.

How to take 360 photos with your iPhone

While iPhones have an equally long list of camera modes, they lack an integrated 360 photo mode. To take 360 photos, you will need to download a third party app in the app store. My personal recommendation is the same as it is for Android. There are a multitude of apps out there on iOS, but I still find Street View the best out there. Taking 360 photos on an iPhone is virtually the same as it is on Android, as the interface and functionally are exactly the same. Find some surroundings that you want to photograph, line up the circle in the orange square and repeat the process until there are no more orange circles.

A little tip that works for both iOS and Android: if you are using Street View to take a 360 photo, take a look at the check mark at the bottom. If it is still orange, you've missed a spot and your 360 photo isn't finished yet. It turns green once you've taken all the photos you need.

Panorama photos

Not all panorama modes are created equal. While iPhone users won't really be able to compare the differences between models (because there aren't any), panorama modes differ widely between Android smartphones. You might not realize until you've either switched or tried out another Android smartphone, but the actual length of a panorama photo can differ greatly between the various OEMs. Here's a sample between batch taken with the Samsung Galaxy S7, iPhone 7 Plus, Google Pixel, LG G4 and Moto X Style. The devices weren't picked because of their physical camera quality but because they are representative for their brand's camera mode (it would be a rather unfair comparison otherwise).

As you can see, Samsung and the Pixel are far more generous with the amount of scenery they let you take, while Motorola comes across quite stingy. I tend to switch back and forth between a few panorama apps, both on Android and iPhone, and my current favorites are DMD Panorama (free on Android and $1.99 on iOS) and Cardboard Camera by Google. If you straight up ask me which one I'd recommend, I'd probably go with Cardboard Camera. It's super simple and makes no fuss. It takes a panorama photo and that's about it. Of course, you can also then use the app to look at the panoramas in a Google Cardboard or any other VR headset, but I see that more as an added bonus. 

And just to see what the added value is of using a panorama app compared to the built-in panorama mode - here's a comparison photo, one taken with the stock camera app of the Moto X Pure and the other taken with the Cardboard Camera. It makes a world of difference.

How to upload 360 photos and panoramas to Facebook

There is one more quite important difference though - and this one will definitely affect how you can share your panorama or 360 photo. Some Android phones save panoramas and 360 photos differently than iPhones, Nexus, Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones. The latter save panorama photos with XMP metadata per default, and it's exactly the XMP metadata that enables people to interact with your 360 photos and panoramas on Facebook and other apps/sites. If, for example, you own a Moto X Style, the camera won't save XMP metadata for the photo. If you try to upload that panorama to Facebook with the hopes of getting that cool VR effect, it's not going to happen. Facebook will just treat it like any other normal boring photo.

Now, if you take a panorama or 360 photo with a Samsung Galaxy S6, you suddenly get a whole host of different options. When you select to share a photo on Facebook, you'll notice that some of them will have a globe in the bottom right corner. This is to signal that this photo will be posted as a 360 photo, meaning that your friends can interact with it. All you need to do is select the photo you want to share, pick the position you want the image to load from and press post.

So how do you upload a 360 photo to Facebook if you don't own an iPhone or one of the few privileged Android phones? Your phone has to run Android 4.4 Kitkat or newer and you need the latest version of the Facebook App installed (that's version 80, in case you're wondering). Facebook doesn't offer a list of compatible Android devices so it's a bit of trial and error. Facebook recommends the Google Street View App and Cardboard Camera to take 360 and panorama photos, but when I tested them on the Moto X Pure, Facebook refused to upload any of the images taken with the apps as a 360 photo. I tested it again with the LG G4 and it worked. The only solution here seems to be to download the respective apps and try it out.

How to log out of facebook on android

I assume herein that you are currently logged into Facebook on your Android phone.

Click on the Facebook application from your Application list:

Click on the icon on the far left hand corner with a blue surround and three horizontal lines – I have highlighted the icon with a green square.

This will load the Facebook menu.

On the Facebook menu, scroll down until you see “Account” – you will see a gear icon on the left hand side of it. 

Once you've clicked on "Account" a menu will appear over the top which will then give you the option to "Log out" of Facebook on your phone.

Click "Log Out" and you will be asked to "confirm" your selection.

You will now be logged out of Facebook on your phone.

More than 10 years after it was launched, Facebook remains the most popular social media site – 72% of online adults are Facebook users, amounting to 62% of all American adults. And even though growth on the site has largely plateaued (new users aren’t signing up at the same rate they used to) you can still use Facebook to grow your blog’s audience and make connections as a brand.

The first step is to create a Facebook page for your blog. You’ll then need to make sure that your Facebook social links are connected to that page’s URL. Before we go over how to use Facebook as a Page let’s talk about why you want to do this.

First, it allows you to connect with your audience without letting your audience see your personal Facebook account. Not to sound paranoid but stranger danger can be real and as a blogger you are putting yourself out there as a public figure and having a little separation is a good thing. For example you should share photos and tag your family members in posts on your personal page but on your blog’s business page you’d just share a picture without tagging anyone.

Second, using Facebook as your page lets you make connections with other brands – as your brand. This way the brand sees interactions from “Windy City Bloggers” not “Erin Bassett” and while I like to think that my name carries weight, I know that WCBC’s weight is much heavier!

Third, sharing posts as your brand to your blog’s Facebook page helps to strengthen the whole concept of your brand to your audience. We advocate for an 80/20 balance on social media – 80% promotion of other’s work or general content and 20% promotion of your own work (or sales). This helps your audience to understand that while you are a creator of content you are also an appreciator of content. Sharing work that you find inspiring or work by your friends makes you a resource for high quality content from across the web. Your readers will start to expect this from you and may start to visit your page first, and spend more time on it, because they know you’re sharing things they want to see.

The benefits continue because building a well-rounded brand is important to succeeding in the crowded blog-o-sphere but let’s get into how to use Facebook as a Page in one simple step.

Change the Facebook User

Navigate to the top menu bar (the blue one) and on the right hand side there is a mini profile picture & your name, the home button and then 5 icons. You’ll want to click on the last icon (the downward facing arrow). That drop down menu will reveal all of the pages you are an administrator of. I’m an admin on 3 pages – my blog’s page, an organization I help fundraise for and WCBC’s page.

Then select the page you want to use Facebook as and it redirects you to that page but notice that the mini profile picture & name have changed.

Use Facebook as Usual

You can hit “home” on the menu and you’ll be directed to a newsfeed. The posts that are compiled here are from people and pages that you’ve liked as a brand so you can curate a newsfeed of the content that you will want to share with your readers on your page!

And since you are now logged in as your brand you can like, comment on and share posts as your brand! Really, just use Facebook as usual and you’ll be building a stronger brand!

Quick note: we are using Google Chrome as our internet browser but the icons should be the same and in the same place across browsers.

Sharing to Your Page from the Facebook Mobile App

Scheduling posts is an important part of managing your social media. But if you are using the Facebook app on your mobile device you can share content to your page on the fly! To do so, tap “share” then select “Write Post”. At the top of the next screen it reads “Your Timeline” then “Tap to Change” and select the page to share it to. You then have the chance to add a comment to the post.

You still can’t comment and like as a page on the mobile app but sharing content to your page on the go is a way to add a content mix to your Blog’s Facebook page.

After some time, downloading will stop, and you will see a popup reading something like, “Download Older version. The current version of the app supports iOS 8 or later.” Tap on Download button in the popup to get the older version of the app.

Can’t Update or Download Facebook Even on Supported iOS Devices?

If you are unable to update or download Facebook even on your supported iOS devices, try updating your device to the latest iOS version.

If the app is already installed on your device, delete it. Then, open Settings app → General → Software Update → then download the latest version of the iOS.

Once you have updated your device, open App Store and search Facebook and install it. Hopefully, the problem will be fixed.

Here's how to to turn off Facebook Live notifications:

1. Go to your Facebook settings. Drill down to Settings>Notifications>On Facebook.
2. Now choose "Edit." (Note: This link should take you directly.)
3. Toggle "Live Videos" to OFF.

Note that this only works from the full Facebook site, not m.facebook.com (which your phone will try to send you to), or from within the Facebook app.
Alternatively, if you just want to kill Facebook Live notifications from a single person or page, you can do so from within the notifications themselves. Just long-press on the person you want to squelch, and then choose whether to dismiss that single notification, or to turn off all notifications of live videos from that person.

Unless you absolutely hate any use of Facebook Live, we might suggest not turning off these notifications permanently. While they might get annoying when you've got groups of friends all showing the same thing (and the same thing that you yourself might be doing), you might well miss something interesting other times.
